SUBJ SHAME ON YOU GENERAL--
(CAMP PENDLETON BUREAU)--Touted as General Allen's endorsement to the Clinton campaign as meaningful, it is if you like scandals--
WASHINGTON — Marine Gen. John R. Allen, the longest-serving leader of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, asked President Barack Obama on Tuesday to accept his retirement from the military
Allen, 59, said his decision was not influenced by a Pentagon investigation into email messages he exchanged with Tampa socialite Jill Kelley, 37, who last year unwittingly set off a scandal that led to the resignation of another top general, David Petraeus, as director of the CIA.
Nor has anyone fully explained why Allen, while busy overseeing the war in Afghanistan, exchanged a blizzard of correspondence with Kelley — between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of e-mails, according to some senior defense officials. Other officials have said that figure includes many duplicate notes and exaggerates the extent of their communications, adding that there were only about 300 total e-mails.
The investigation focuses on emails between Allen and Jill Kelley, a close friend of the Petraeus family. Kelley was the woman who originally notified the FBI when she received threatening emails from Petraeus' mistress Paula Broadwell -- and that investigation later uncovered the affair.
One senior defense official initially described the nature of the communications between Allen and Kelley as "flirtatious." However, two U.S. officials later told Fox News that Allen's contact with Kelley was more than just general flirting. One official described some of the emails as sexually explicit and the “equivalent of phone sex over email.”
