(MAMASANS)--Following may have been one of the VP candidate's earliest death penalty cases, where he lost and the killer was executed.

OCALA STAR BANNER-- JULY 7, 1987

Outside the prison, Whitley's attorney, Timothy Kaine, offered prayers for the condemned man, the victim's family and death-penalty supporters. "Mur-der is wrong," he said. Whitley, who was convicted in 1981, had said that his wife had left him and that he had gone on a two-week alcohol and drug binge. Appeals over the past six years depicted him as mentally disturbed and the product of a troubled childhood. Kaine argued last week before the state Supreme Court that his client was "feeble-minded" and "bor-derline retarded" with a verbal IQ of 75.
